Industrial heat pumps session 2: Applying the Industrial Heat Pump using a Circular Thermal approach to industrial thermal assessments
Mar 28, 2024
Halle Nixon- Thermal Decarbonization Engineer, Armstrong International
Circular ThermalTM optimizes thermal systems to capture the wasted energy normally sent to a stack, down a drain, or to a cooling tower. By using a Circular ThermalTM methodology to optimize thermal systems, customers understand their true energy requirements, and identify the best solutions to complete the decarbonization journey. Today, high temperature heat pumps can reach temperatures up to 248°F. This allows heat pumps to be used in more energy-intensive applications, while still offering the benefit of a positive return on investment with lower energy consumption. This session will discuss the benefits, challenges, and workings of the industrial heat pumps.
Industrial heat pumps session 1: Using Circular Thermal and Pinch Methodology to recognize industrial heat pump opportunities in light industry
Mar 26, 2024
Peter DeWitt- North America Director- Circular Thermal, Armstrong International
Decarbonizing the chemical industry can feel like a daunting task, but it has a substantial impact on the environment and energy savings. One reason for the difficulty in decarbonizing this sector is the thermal energy-intensive processes using non-renewables for heat. Decarbonizing these processes without the right technology and experience lead to rushing capex and opex requirements. This in turn leads to poor or negative returns on investments and the possibility of missing decarbonization goals. Fortunately, there are ways to decarbonize thermal systems with a positive return on investment. This can be accomplished by incorporating a methodology Armstrong International calls Circular ThermalTM. Circular ThermalTM includes thermal mapping studies and Pinch Analyses to identify waste heat streams where direct heat recovery - using coils, and low-grade heat recovery using heat pumps - can help achieve decarbonization goals.

Using Transactive Energy to Optimize System Operations with Grid Constraints
Nov 8, 2023
Stephen MacDonald - Founder, Energy Profit LLC
stephenmacdonald@energyprofitllc.com
As our Nation's Electrical Power System (ESP) grows to meet 100% clean energy and electrification/decarbonization goals, Front of the Meter and Behind the Meter equipment must operate in concert. The legacy consumption-only customer can now have their devices provide grid-firming services, e.g., energy generation, capacity reduction, and frequency repsonse, under current business models, compensation for individuals, providing such services, is not equitable. They buy services at retail and sell at wholesale. At this trend continues to grow, the importance of establishing an equitable business model equally grows and is known as Transactive Energy (TE). During this session, we will discuss TE and how it facilities grid reliability while fostering equitable rate design.

Automated Fault Detection and Diagnosis of Packaged Rooftop Units Using A Data-Driven Approach -2022 Student Research Award
Oct 11, 2023
Md Rasel Uddin PhD Student
The typical soft faults related to packaged rooftop units (RTU) include airflow reduction in the condenser and evaporator, liquid-line restricton, non-condensable gases, improper refrigerant charge, and compressor valve leakage. These faults degrade the system's performance and affect the equipment, energy consumption, and the environment. Previous research in soft fault detection for packaged rooftop units lacked model validation through lab and field data, developing a generalizable model and analyzing model performance across varying fault intensities. To fill these gaps, based on 8 measurable variables, this study proposes a machine-learning model to detect and diagnose the above soft faults from the rooftop units. The proposed model, validated using lab and field-testing sets, demonstrated predictive accuracies of 60% and 96% respectively, while also revealing higher accuracy in detecting faults with greater fault severity. With further improvements, this model has potential applications to easily detect soft faults in an industrial assessment, helping to develop additional energy and cost savings recommendations.

Power Drive Systems for Motor-Driven Equipment
Jun 2, 2022
Rob Boteler: Nidec Corporation, Sarah Widder: Cadeo Group, Rick Huddle: Cadeo Group, Dale Basso: WEG
Combining motors with adjustable speed drives and sensors to create a Power Drive System (PDS) allow the system to manage input energy (kWh) to match the load requirements and shift the focus of overall energy savings. PDSs have long been associated with variable load installations, but a recent study published by NEEA (Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance) and NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association), showed the potential for savings even in constant load applications. PDS also provide non-energy benefits: including reducing peak demand, more precise control, and greater reliability. As the nation implements infrastructure improvements across the economy, the adoption of a PDS could future-proof investments in industrial, manufacturing, and other facilities. In this training, we will discuss the benefits of PDS across a wide range of applications and opportunities that PDSs provide to the IAC and its partners. As an outcome of this training we hope attendees will be equipped to recommend PDS to IAC partners more frequently, resulting in more enegry savings, carbon savings, cost savings, and process improvements.

This effort is an opportunity to meet the urgent call to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Partners receive technical assistance from DOE as well as opportunities to learn and share actionable best practices for carbon reduction as they work to meet their goals.
Improving Variable Frequency Drives Assessment Recommendations
Feb 21, 2022
Aditya Mairal, PhD Student, CAES - Rutgers University
Variable frequency drive (VFD) is a type of motor drive that controls the speed and torque of an AC motor by varying the motor input frequency which in turn affects the power drawn by the motor.
